Poor Quality - Short cord - not UL listed - can get extremely hot - Kendo - Central Ohio
I needed another backup charger for my Dell laptop. I bought this one to try and save some money. I should have just grabbed my ankles taken the standard Dell raping and paid full price for another Dell branded adapter.br /br /Many Latitude and other Dell laptops use proprietary technology which means that "generic" adapters will allow the laptop to run on AC but not actually charge the battery (thanks Dell!!). Whatever Chinese company is making these has reverse-engineered that function, so this charger will (supposedly) both power the laptop and charge the battery at the same time.br /br /It will indeed charge the battery, but with my unit a battery with a very low charge will cause the adapter to start to overheat due to the sustained high amperage draw. Then the voltage will start to drop in and out, sometimes dropping so low that the laptop will sense that the adapter is unplugged and dim the screen. Meanwhile you are greeted with the wonderful stink of cooking plastic. br /br /Knowing the quality control in these types of factories, it is possible that plenty of good adapters make it through the door and I got one of the bad ones. Looking at the build quality of this thing you are definitely rolling the dice if you buy one.br /br /I will keep this adapter because it will serve the purpose for my specific application. I keep my laptop with me 24x7x365 and this is my bedroom adapter. There is an outlet less than two feet from where I use it and my laptop has normally been charged elsewhere by the end of the day when I end up in the room so the charging problem isn't that much of a nuisance. I would never travel with this. It is probably a fire hazzard as well but for me death by a computer related fire would probably be a fitting way to end.br /br /In summary:br /br /-Not UL listed. Probably illegal to sell in the USAbr /-Cord is too shortbr /-Prone to overheatingbr /-Unreliable chargingbr /-Questionable quality overallbr /-Significantly less expensive than Dell branded product it replacesbr /br /br /

I don't know how North Parts is able to sell a product made in China and not approved from a US safety laboratory (like UL). The cord is shorter than the original too, which doesn't work if you're always on the go.
