Poor Quality - Short cord - not UL listed - can get extremely hot - Kendo - Central Ohio
I needed another backup charger for my Dell laptop. I bought this one to try and save some money. I should have just grabbed my ankles taken the standard Dell raping and paid full price for another Dell branded adapter.br /br /Many Latitude and other Dell laptops use proprietary technology which means that "generic" adapters will allow the laptop to run on AC but not actually charge the battery (thanks Dell!!). Whatever Chinese company is making these has reverse-engineered that function, so this charger will (supposedly) both power the laptop and charge the battery at the same time.br /br /It will indeed charge the battery, but with my unit a battery with a very low charge will cause the adapter to start to overheat due to the sustained high amperage draw. Then the voltage will start to drop in and out, sometimes dropping so low that the laptop will sense that the adapter is unplugged and dim the screen. Meanwhile you are greeted with the wonderful stink of cooking plastic. br /br /Knowing the quality control in these types of factories, it is possible that plenty of good adapters make it through the door and I got one of the bad ones. Looking at the build quality of this thing you are definitely rolling the dice if you buy one.br /br /I will keep this adapter because it will serve the purpose for my specific application. I keep my laptop with me 24x7x365 and this is my bedroom adapter. There is an outlet less than two feet from where I use it and my laptop has normally been charged elsewhere by the end of the day when I end up in the room so the charging problem isn't that much of a nuisance. I would never travel with this. It is probably a fire hazzard as well but for me death by a computer related fire would probably be a fitting way to end.br /br /In summary:br /br /-Not UL listed. Probably illegal to sell in the USAbr /-Cord is too shortbr /-Prone to overheatingbr /-Unreliable chargingbr /-Questionable quality overallbr /-Significantly less expensive than Dell branded product it replacesbr /br /br /

I don't know how North Parts is able to sell a product made in China and not approved from a US safety laboratory (like UL). The cord is shorter than the original too, which doesn't work if you're always on the go.

Okay the ONE poor review on this item complains that it is overpriced and plastic. Well it is both... but any slight overpicing is well worth it for the overall brilliance of design and amazing functionality. And the plastic is very nice! What else would it be made of? Metal would interfere with the 802.11 g connectivity. It's just a killer idea, this thing. I was all set to waste another 0 on yet another piece of obsolescent technology for my crowded desk... a flat screen monitor for my Fujitsu C series desktop replacement. Did tons of research and then stumbled on the Oyster. Not only did it save me 400 bucks but the screen is at an excellent height.. one that could not be achieved with most flat screen monitors! At that height I can lean back on the Aeron, and have my gaze and my hand position in the best possible ergonomic position (the one recommended by those HR drone types). When I've got to take my laptop on the road, I just slip it out and unplug a couple cables... the Oyster is all set up for my return and makes for an easy re-dock. This is not a true docking station, but it does have a bunch of USB 2.0 ports for a quick unhitch. And of course the Oyster is a beautiful piece of design... really clean and good looking on the desk. With the Oyster my faithful laptop attains the recognition and superstardom it deserves!

When my oysterdock is in use, my laptop is hooked up to external interface, midi controllers, audio interface, hard drives, keyboard, mouse, network, power an additional monitor, a dongle, and of course, power. That adds up to 8 cables. The only way I could find to make this work and look good at the same time was the oyster. It does take a bit of brainpower to get all of this together the first time, but if you lay it out on it's front on a flat surface on it's not a problem. I'm completely happy with it. It's a great product. Even fits my widescreen Dell properly.

The docking station replicates all of the connectors and ports from the side of the 12" PowerBook and routes the connectors, through its unique design, to the back of the dock. The dock allows for all of the peripheral devices normally connected to the side of the PowerBook - Power, Ethernet, Modem, FireWire, USB, Audio In, Audio Out to be plugged into the back of the dock, and remain plugged in, independent of the computer. The dock also converts RGB to VGA*. Taking the computer from the office or the home, or moving it from one room to another, doesn't require disconnecting and reconnecting several devices. *Converts RGB to VGA on the 12" PowerBooks that were released in Jan. 2003.

I have one at home and one at the office. The one at the office I use with a second monitor in extended desktop mode. The one at home I use with external keyboard and a single big monitor. Even though the setups are different, they remember all their settings and it is a snap to go back and forth so easily without any extra tweaks. br /br /I should say that I pretty much had to go this route to use my extra monitors, because the EliteBook 6930p output to a second monitor is terrible on it's own. A major flaw in that model in my opinion and others have said the same. But the docking stations delivers a clean signal and solves the issue, albeit an expensive workaround.
